San Francisco CA | Completed
The six-story building continues the repair of the neighborhood rift caused by the collapse and removal of the Central Freeway. It features a custom weathering-steel gate, landscaped entry courtyard, flexible work-lounge space, and a panoramic roof deck. The surrounding sidewalks have been widened and upgraded with traffic-calming bulb-outs to create a buffer for the building and contribute to a generous streetscape for pedestrians. The project was endorsed by both Walk SF and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.
The defining glossy convex megabay, clad in local Fireclay Tile—pairs with the concave curve of the Richardson Apartments—also designed by DBA—across the street to form a dramatic urban frame for City Hall. The hand-picked mix of black tones turns silvery at dusk, reflecting the surrounding sky.
The larger units average 700 sf, while the 325-sf studios offer “affordability by design”—a lower cost for the smaller space, which has proven popular with younger professionals as well as seniors.
Developed on a shared site in tandem with a new clubhouse for the Boys and Girls Club, the housing tops spaces for local restaurants—including the DBA-designed Johnny Doughnuts—in close proximity to the Hayes Street retail corridor. The centrally located community offers no residential car parking, instead accommodating a garage that houses the Boys and Girls Club vans.
One bicycle parking space per home is provided in a secure ground-level bike room with quick, easy access to Gough Street. This convenient bike station features double-height bike racks in custom colors and a repair stand with tire pump and tools.
The project, among other local works by DBA, was recognized by architecture critic John King in the San Francisco Chronicle.
