750 Golden Gate Phase 1

San Francisco CA | In Design

Focused on providing attainable homes for City educators and child-care providers, 750 Golden Gate is the first new affordable housing resulting from California’s Surplus Land Act to break ground in San Francisco.

As part of the Surplus Land Act—which aims to repurpose unused public land for affordable housing—750 Golden Gate will replace an existing Employment Development Department (EDD) parking lot with a new affordable housing community plus replacement parking for EDD staff.

This first phase of a two-phase project will create 75 affordable rental homes for San Francisco’s public school teachers, paraeducators, child-care workers, and City College employees. A future second-phase building with 96 affordable homes will follow at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Franklin Street.

The building’s central Civic Center location allows residents access to ample transit and parks in the neighborhood. The eight-story sculptural facade is punctuated with strategic facets and cuts, with glazed brick in bright hues at the street edge to bring a sense of playfulness to the neighborhood. A dramatic “canyon” staircase is cut into the face of the building. While maximizing the number of affordable homes, the community offers a quiet split-level courtyard, a play area for kids, and a common room for programs, gatherings, and events.

The San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) has committed $20mm to this project to bring new homes that support City employees to live in the communities they serve.
