Northside Community Center

San Jose CA | Completed

2002

A update of an outgrown community center, Northside Community Center was designed with input from the senior organization for whose members it was intended in San Jose.

At five times the size of the outmoded center it replaced, this new community building improves a vital existing social center for seniors in this San Jose neighborhood. Designed with input from a senior community organization and the long-term operator of the existing community center, Northside amply serves the senior residents from Mabuhay Court, as well as being an important asset for the surrounding area.

By taking a holistic approach to the shared site of the community center and the adjacent senior housing, it was possible to maximize the site to the benefit of both projects. The private residences have a thoughtful relationship to both the surrounding streets and the adjacent community center, which joins a corner public park and meditation garden in creating an open and welcoming gathering place for the neighborhood.
