Senior Housing Playbook

| Completed

2024

The Senior Housing Playbook is a best-practices guide intended to elevate the human experience within DCHA Senior buildings by prioritizing the safety, comfort, community, and dignity of residents and staff.

Commissioned by DCHA, DBA and Shopworks Architecture developed the Playbook and curriculum to level-up the development and design process for new-construction and rehabilitation senior housing in the DCHA pipeline. The primary goal is to increase overall wellness and residents’ ability to age in place in DCHA properties. The desired impact is to shift the design and development approach toward prioritizing as a primary driver the lived experience of residents and community members.

Drawing on on DBA’s deep portfolio of affordable and senior housing and Shopworks’ extensive Trauma-Informed Design  research and workshops, the Playbook establishes a foundation based on trauma-informed design; encourages and guides a trauma-informed development process; and provides innovative design solutions, development tools, and resources.
