Wyatt Builds

Birmingham AL | Completed

2024

This transformation of an empty 1930s warehouse preserves the building’s structure and character while harnessing light, air, and texture for a new collaborative office space for Wyatt Builds, a Birmingham-based construction firm.

DBA collaborated with Wyatt Builds—a woman-owned construction firm—to create an inviting, light-filled headquarters that showcases the firm’s craftsmanship within the context of the original historic warehouse.

In creating their first owned office space, Wyatt Builds sought to both highlight their construction skills and create a comfortable, inspiring space for their daily work.

The most was made of the existing materials and assets: Soda blasting—an alternative to sandblasting—revealed the original brick and terra cotta flooring, and the exposed lumber was milled to bring in a clean, natural aesthetic. Removing the roof of the enclosed courtyard created an open and sunny yet secluded gathering area.

Key design elements played with ideas of transparency and exposure. Translucent double-walled polycarbonate panels delineate a gallery of private offices while maintaining brightness and connection to collaborative work spaces. A custom-built catwalk leads to a private loft, accessed via a spiral staircase retrofitted with guardrails made from animal mesh—a flexible, low-profile fencing material.

Throughout, masculine and feminine elements are carefully balanced, such as the pairing of stainless steel appliances with custom furnishings.
